I have to admit I did not know Amen was a name of God. The author and artist Hovsepian, in her book "Coloring the Names of God", references Revelation 3:14 for this name:
(NASB20)
“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Origin of the creation of God, says this:"
(KJV)
"And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creating of God;"
When I read it like this I suddenly realize I don't really know what amen means. I mean, amen means... amen. I'm used to how it's used in Philippians 4:20:
(NASB20)
"Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen."
So I went to look up amen in the context of the Greek, part of speech, origin, ...
Who am I kidding. I'm terrible at languages.
I did a lot of layman research and learned that this universally understood word is insanely complex! I pulled myself out of the interlinear weeds and went back to the basics of comparing scripture with scripture.
When I thought about it, this is a common way of addressing God. God is:
- The Way
- The Truth
- The Life
- The Door
- The Vine
There are lots of doors but God is The Door. There are lots of ways but God is The Way. God is The Amen so we just need to know the meaning of amen.
Amen in Revelation 3:14 and Philippians 4:20 is the same Greek word. It means firm, faithful, surely. Addressing God as The Firm or The Surely is awkward but some appropriate synonyms would work:
- The Unyielding
- The Steadfast
- The Secure
- The Certain
Certain is a complex word but, for my tiny little child-brain, it begins to help me understand amen and doesn't contradict God. He is certain and my child-brain can keep this interpretation in my pocket as I learn more about The Amen.
